What is an IDP?
An IDP is a translated copy of your driving license that allows you to drive in other countries.
Why should you get an IDP?
Renting a car gives you the most freedom to explore a new place. The AAA-issued IDP is valid in 150 countries around the world. Many countries require one in order to rent a car. Even if the country doesn’t require it, the rental company most likely will. In some places you can be fined for driving without one.

How to get an IDP:
There are two ways to apply for an IDP:
- Apply in person at a AAA office
- Apply by mail
How to apply in person:
There is no need for an appointment. Just go to a local AAA office.
Don’t forget these documents:
- Completed application form
- Two original passport photos (also available at AAA offices)
- A valid U.S. driver’s license
- $20 permit fee
You will receive your IDP on the spot.
How to apply by mail if you are in the USA:
Mail the following documents to the nearest AAA office.
- Completed application form
- Two original passport photos, each signed on the back
- $20 permit fee
- A photocopy of both sides of your driver’s license

How to apply by mail if you are outside of the USA:
Mail your application (including all documents above) to this address:

- It will take about 5-7 weeks to receive your IDP
- Use Fedex for international mail
- Don’t forget to provide a street address
Important Information:
Here are some other useful things to know.
- You can decide when the IDP becomes effective
- The IDP cannot be issued more than 6 months before the effective date
- The AAA-issued IDP is valid for 1 year.
